Workshop Follow-up

19 Jan

In a word: wonderful. I’ll start by thanking you for coming and I hope you know it’s been a pleasure to be able to make this workshop. I also thank the crew over at iStyle Cotroceni. The store makes an effort to help photographers, and I, with their help, do my best to make events like these exist. I already feel like home there.

We talked about how we can “build” an image through lighting and about a few details we should focus on. I insisted a little more on the technical side, because many people are afraid of the technical side. Through propper understanding of basic lighting technique, that “barrier” can be set apart and we could pay more attention to the actual image. I hope I turned things around a bit for you.

Workshop – Food Photography 101

11 Jan

Friday, January the 13th at 19:00 o’clock, I’m hosting a (free) photography workshop named “Food Photography 101″. The workshop will take place at iStyle Cotroceni and will last for about an hour – an hour and a half. The main goal of the workshop is to present the basic techniques in food photography, offering a good first-step to beginning photographers and some useful tips and tricks to more experienced ones.

It’s gonna be a cool and relaxed workshop, the one you’d expect at an Apple Store, and my main concern will be you going home with a good-learned technique and approach. Even complicated images can be broken down into simple techniques, and knowing how to do that can make your life a lot easier. After all, food photography is more based on shape and colour, and less on complicated technique. By learning the basics right, you’ll be able to concentrate less on the technique and more on the image itself.

Snapseed – free for new year’s eve

31 Dec

Right before I turn everything off and get ready for the new year, I leve you with the best app you can get for photo editing on iOS. The reason I’m writing about this now is that they’ve just offered if for free (for a limited time).

Snapseed is an app made by Nik Software, known for their great Photoshop and Capture NX plugins. It can handle RAW files and has a lot of editing tools, with Selective Adjust being the flagship tool, using the U-point technology, similar to Capture NX2′s Color Control Point..

Sylights app for iPad

28 Dec

Screenshot din aplicația Sylights pentru iPad.

Sylights – www.sylights.com – is a pretty simple iPad app that enables us to create lighting diagrams. Whether we saw a lighting scheme that we want to remember, whether we thought of a lighting scheme and we want to make a plan for our next shoot or we want to write a tutorial, we need to make a lighting scheme. This free app comes right in hand.

Corporate Portrait – Razvan Ziemba

22 Dec

Last week I had a pretty interesting photo shoot. I had to make a couple of business portraits of Răzvan Ziemba, CEO of Network One Distribution (ex. Asesoft). The time I had with him was extremely limited, and unlike my last 10 minute shoot, I wasn’t in my studio and the stake was a lot higher.

I’m Giving Away a Limited Edition Print

09 Dec

As the title says, I’m giving away this limited edition print.

I wrote here before about the Romanian Athenaeum concert. It was one of the most beautiful concerts I’ve ever been at, ever. From a photographer’s point of view it was special. Difficult but exciting, and at the same time it all happened so fast. I was never so exhausted after a concert. You can read about it in it’s dedicated post, with fresher memories. I think this image best defines both Urma, and the Romanian Athenaeum.

About the giveaway, it’s already printed, signed, and now can be yours. Not exactly now, to be completely honest, but on December the 17th (next Saturday), after the Urma concert in Jukebox, this limited-edition-one-meter-print can be yours. And because Santa Claus really has Urma on his Jukebox, he’ll give you some more presents, including:

  • an HTC Sensation XL smartphone together with a pair of Beats XL headphones, from Orange
  • an year’s subscription to Playboy Magazine
  • a full festival pass to BESTFEST Summer Camp 2012
  • a BMW Art Cars Collection model Matazo Kayama, signed by Mani Gutau, the owner of the complete Art Cars Collections
  • a pair of Bose MIE2, from Bose
  • a full defensive driving course at the Claudiu David Driving Academy. In the unlikely event you don’t know who Claudiu David is, Google can help.

Biking the Annapurna Circuit – Episode 5: Acclimatization

05 Dec

I wake up being very relaxed. It wasn’t too cold at night and we weren’t in a hurry today. After reading the indications on the map and after a talk with Padam, we decide that today would be our acclimatization day. We’d climb to 4200-4500m alt. stay for a couple of hours, and return to Braka for the night. Then we’d go on tomorrow for Ladakh. The most important thing one must know about AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is that you must go down to lower altitude, in order to, well, live. Our plan was to pedal our way to Thorong La (5416m), so we must take all the necessary steps in order to avoid AMS.

So I wake up and look outside through the window. I see everything is full of snow and it’s snowing beautifully, sometimes with huge snowflakes. It took me a moment or two to realize. OH CR*P, IT’S SNOWING! Some ran some fast, mental, calculations and it didn’t look good. We are way behind schedule, we have 15 kg mountain bikes, we are only at 3500m altitude and knee-deep snow is certainly not going to help us. The main problem is we can’t spare even a single day, since we’d then lose our flight back to Romania. Bad snow, bad snow.

Flipboard – the perfect social app

18 Nov

Let’s do the presentations: Flipboard – iPad, iPad – Flipboard. Although I consider myself a bit slow for not using Flipboard earlier, I’m still glad I did eventually.

It’s not a photography app. It is the exact app you’d use for a magazine, during your morning coffee. The difference is that, besides the online publications, Flipboard also aggregates social media (Facebook, Twitter, 500px, Tumblr). It’s not the only app that does that, but the way it displays and lets you interact with the information is brilliant. You have to see it to believe it.
